From the earliest days on the web, web designers and developers have had a small subset of fonts to use: Standard web-safe fonts that would appear in most browsers and operating systems. Times have changed and now designers and developers have a wealth of typefaces to choose from that work across mediums and devices- from print to web on desktops, tablets, and smartphones.
HTML5 and CSS3 have paved the way for web type today on modern devices and browsers. Many type foundries have licensed their typefaces for use on the web, in addition to the tradational desktop licenses. At the same time, Google Web Fonts, Font Squirrel, and other similar sites have been created to offer free hosted web fonts.
